Mexico Spring Break Planning Guide: Cabo & Cancún

Spring break trips fail in the group chat, not at the destination. Somebody waits on flights, prices jump, two people drop, the Airbnb falls through. This guide is the timeline and the decisions, in order, from a team that spends every March running nights for spring break groups in Mexico.

Step 1: Pick your week (September–October)

US and Canadian spring breaks spread across March into early April, with the heaviest Mexico traffic in the two middle weeks of March. Earlier weeks are cheaper and calmer; peak weeks are the full circus — decide which one you actually want. Both Cabo San Lucas and Cancún are dry-season perfect in March: warm, sunny, essentially zero rain risk.

Step 2: Pick your city (October)

• Los Cabos — one compact, walkable downtown strip by the marina, seven partner venues on our network, and El Squid Roe (the landmark club running since 1989) as the traditional last stop. Step 3: Flights (by mid-November)

March fares to both airports climb steadily from December on. Book by mid-November for the best combination of price and seat inventory, especially for groups of six-plus trying to sit on the same flight. Collect everyone's money before booking — the friend who "will pay you back" is the number-one cause of dead trips.

Step 4: Lodging (by December)

• Cabo: stay downtown or marina-adjacent and you can walk to everything at night. Villas suit groups of 8–14; split the cost per bed, not per room.
• Cancún: location beats star rating. A hotel near Punta Cancún puts the party district on foot; a nicer resort at Km 16 means shuttling every night.

Step 5: Nightlife (2–4 weeks out)

This is where the deposit model earns its keep for spring break specifically. On our network, a group locks per-person spots on a hosted night for only the deposit — $15 to $25 each — with the balance paid at check-in. Four formats, same prices in both cities:

Budget: what a week actually costs

Per person, 5 nights, sharing rooms, March pricing, excluding flights: lodging $350–$700, food $150–$300, daytime activities $100–$250, nightlife $150–$300 (two hosted pass nights plus a free-form night covers most crews), plus tips and transport. Call it $750–$1,550 per person on the ground — the spread is almost entirely lodging choice. Two levers move the number most: splitting a villa or suite across more beds, and swapping one restaurant dinner a day for street tacos, which in both cities are better than half the sit-down options anyway.

The five mistakes that kill spring break trips

• Waiting for consensus on everything. Groups that vote on the city, then the week, then every hotel option, book in January at March prices. Decide the big three fast and let the details follow.
• Booking lodging by photos instead of location. A gorgeous resort 10 kilometers from the nightlife means your group pays for rides twice a night, every night, in surge weeks.
• Leaving nightlife to "we'll figure it out there." On peak March nights, walk-up lines at top venues are exactly the thing everyone flew here to avoid. Deposits exist so this is a $15 decision, not a $65 one.
• No shared money system. Pick one app, settle nightly, zero IOUs. Money resentment is the only thing that can actually ruin a good trip.
• Overpacking the itinerary. One anchor plan per day. The best spring break stories come from the unplanned half of the day, not the spreadsheet half.

The unglamorous essentials

• Bring a physical ID. Every night is 18+ and doors check real documents, not photos of documents.
• Budget gratuity. Tipping follows US norms (15–20%); it is not included in any pass, anywhere, on purpose.
• Assign a money captain. One person books, everyone reimburses instantly. Democracies plan trips; dictatorships take them.
• Plan one recovery day. Five consecutive big nights is a rookie itinerary. The best crews alternate: big night, beach day, big night.
• Screenshot everything. Confirmations, meeting points, times — cell service inside packed venues is unreliable in every country on earth.
